Conference Kick Starts Agenda For Change

Thirty-five delegates attended an important conference, organised by The Cambridgeshire Chambers of Commerce and hosted by Murray Edwards College, which explored the issue of gender inequality at work and set an agenda for change.

The event provided a focus on how men and women can work together to champion change in the area of workplace gender inequality which remains a challenge in many organisations – and included a presentation on new research carried out by the College.

Speakers included: Fiona Duffy, Director of Development, Murray Edwards College;
Qun Yang, Co-founder of Biorbyt Ltd and Executive Director of Wo+Men’s Leadership Centre, Cambridge Judge Business School; Anne Bailey, Co-founder, Form the Future CIC; and Sarah Howard MBE, Vice President of the British Chambers of Commerce who delivered the keynote address at the beginning of the event. The event was chaired by Karen Beckwith, Executive Director Subsidiaries and Business Services at Peterborough Regional College who also chairs the Chamber’s Business Women’s Sector.

Presentations covered a range of related topics including the importance of challenging stereotyping from an early age, how women should take ideas back to their own workplace to enact change and how to build closer relations between men and women.

Freya Vaughan, Marketing & Events Officer at Murray Edwards College said: “This was a highly successful event and we were delighted to be chosen as the host for such a high profile conference on behalf of the Cambridgeshire Chamber of Commerce’s Business Women’s Sector.

“The general consensus was that Murray Edward was an entirely appropriate and inspirational venue for such a conference, setting the scene for an agenda for change. Our Buckingham House Conference Centre provided ideal spaces for all aspects of the event including registration, coffee and networking and formal presentations.”

Karen Beckwith, Chair of the Business Women’s Sector for Cambridgeshire Chamber of Commerce said: “Murray Edwards College provided a perfect backdrop for those attending to explore gender inequality and the impact of unconscious bias in the workplace.  We are delighted with the positive feedback and look forward to hosting a further conference in 2019!”
